Every week in our worship service we pray together the Apostle’s Creed. We pray this together along side Christians around the world. We declare our belief in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. How does this belief in the Trinity make or break us in our daily lives? My hope is that when people leave worship on Sunday to live a more productive, successful life, feeling empowered to make a positive difference each day.
There is another trinity out there which is important to the way we life. That is known as the three “Rs” – “reading, (w)riting and (a)rithmetic”. These are critical skills to have in order to be successful and feel fulfilled. But there are other abilities and beliefs that are equally critical if we are going to live a long and happy life.
First we must have confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are a capable people, we have the ability to contribute to so many things in meaningful way. We have the power to influence what happens to us in our lives and that is an awesome thing but it also carries an awesome responsibility. This responsibility is what scares many of us into feeling like we are helpless, which in turn destroys any confidence that we might have.
We have the ability and power to understand and control your own emotions. We blame so many of our actions on our emotions, both positive and negative actions. But we have the ability to control how we feel and how we act. If we are angry at someone we have the choice to pick up the phone and yell at them or we can gather ourselves together and handle it is a more appropriate way. Understanding to develop self-discipline is very important to success. Learning about effective communication, cooperation, negotiation, sharing, listening and empathizing, are all essential in how we live.
Finally, none of this would be possible without someone to lean on. When we feel overwhelmed, under-appreciated or driven to the point of no return there is someone who is always there listening and helping us and that is God in Christ Jesus. Our belief in God is something that will always be there with us and for us. All of the things that I mentioned above would not be possible without the support of God.
What do you suppose the world would look like if our kids came out of school with these abilities and beliefs as well as the usual “three Rs?”
