I have an 11 year old son! It’s hard for me to believe that my son is 11 years old. It seems like only yesterday I was holding him in my arms, trying to figure out how to be a father. What a journey it has been.
Logan has lived in nine different homes, six different churches, four different schools and three different states. He has played football and soccer, taken swimming lessons, gone to eight weeks of summer camp and has participated in countless number of Vacation Bible Schools.
Being a PK (pastor’s kid) has its advantages and disadvantages. Logan has walked through life with enough confidence, energy and grace to make me proud. He is so much like me that it both excites me and scares me. He is his birthday letter:
It’s your 11th birthday. I can hardly believe where time has gone. I remember the moment we met, it was quite an adventure. You came into this world like you live your life – with drive, energy and the ability to scare your parents to death! 🙂 You were the best baby we could ever imagine. You slept well, you hardly ever cried and we could take you anywhere (including my classes at seminary). And now, now you are becoming quite a young man.
There are a few traits that you possess that I want to tell you about and that I have noticed over the years, these things prove to me that you are getting older and that you are going to be an amazing young man. You are:
CARING. I love to watch how you care for your sister. I know she gets on your nerves sometimes but you play with her and make her laugh and I can see how you truly love her. You also care for your family, friends and other people that you meet. Thank you.
SENSITIVE. I can see how sensitive you are and that warms my heart. I am thankful that you have that characteristic. No matter what anyone tells you keep that trait.
BRAVE. You are brave. You are willing to try new things and be adventurous. Whenever you feel scared and you don’t want to move forward with something, remember how brave you are, take a deep breath and push through the fear. You will be thankful that you did.
SMART. You are so smart. I know you don’t always think you are but you are! Not only do you have the ability to do well in school, but you have some street smarts as well. You have a good instinct and that will serve you well in the future.
FUNNY. You make me laugh, you have a great sense of humor. I love being around you. You don’t have to put on a show to to make people laugh, just be yourself and people will love you.
TALENTED. When you attempt something you love, when you find something you are passionate about, you excel at it. I love to watch you in your element and do what you love. Keep cooking, keep playing the trombone, keep writing stories and drawing and keep finding more stuff to be passionate about. Use your talents!
Follow your heart and dream big! I could not be more proud of you. My heart is overflowing with love and pride.
Thank you for occasionally still allowing me to hold your hand and cuddle with you. I know I embarrass you sometimes but I know deep down inside you love it 🙂
Happy 11th birthday, I love you! Dad
