Promises to Ourselves

I have been preaching a lot about promises this year during Advent.  I think the promises that God makes to us are some of the most important promises of our lives.  As I have reflected upon the promises God makes to us, I began to wonder how we honor (or don’t honor) the promises that we make to ourselves.

I, like you have made many promises to myself.  For example, “tomorrow I am going to wash my car — I promise” or “this week  I am going to eat healthy, no more junk food — I promise.”

There is nothing worse than making a promise to yourself or someone else and not keep it.

Think about how upset your are with yourself when you break a promise to someone.  Do you feel the same way when you break a promise to yourself?  You are just as important!!

Your word is one of the most precious things you have, to other people as well as to yourself.  However, many people think very little of keeping a promise made to themselves.  This is a mistake for two reasons.

1.  It weakens your credibility with other people and yourself.  How can people trust you if you do not keep your word?  But even more importantly, it weakens your credibility, trustworthiness and reliability with yourself.  When you do not keep your word with yourself, you hurt your self-esteem, you hurt your self-worth and you stop being able to depend on the most important person in your life…..you!!

Once you make a promise, keep it!  A broken word is like a broken cup it can’t hold much for long.

2.  It’s not what God intends for you.  Our lives benefit greatly because we have the Word of God.  Jesus tells us “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

We are free because we have the Word of God, we have the greatest thing in the world!! Throughout the Bible we have seen God give His word, from the covenant God made with Noah, to Abraham, to Moses, to Jesus and now to us.  God’s promise is that God is there for us all the time.  God does not break promises.  So if God loves us that much, why can’t we love ourselves?

Living our best life means we should treat ourselves like God does, with love and respect.

It is not always easy to do that, and we are not going to be perfect.  However, if we begin today, with practice we can change our lives and the lives around us.
